Then I traded with Rome to secure peace on the western front and struck out into the East. The Empire Divided and Rise of the Republic campaigns offer significant variation over the base game. There is depth in the province building, the tech tree, skill trees, the politics and the faction diversity. Set the Getae up as a client state in Dacia as a buffer zone to the north. Vanilla Rome 2 is fantastic and one of the best Total War games mechanically. I secured Greece, Thrace, Pannonia, and Illyricum. Makedon: I had great fun recreating Alexander’s campaign. Tactically, the combination of solid infantry, great cavalry, and respectable ranged units is nice. The Arverni: good use of confederation can help you build a solid empire fairly quickly. And others are basically Gallic, Hellenic, or Italic. Others are more like using Romans with a heavy reliance on Scutarii. They do the standard hammer (shock cavalry and elephants) and anvil (phalanx) really well. I have some armies that are mostly citizens. I like the variety from the available mercenary options.
